Una ortofoto consisteix en una fotografia aèria vertical amb escala constant i propietats d’una projecció ortogonal, elaborada a partir d’un mosaic d’imatges aèries rectificades. Per tant una ortofoto té les propietats mètriques d’un mapa i la informació d’una fotografia, i a més està georeferenciada, el que permet poder superposar-la amb altra informació geogràfica de caràcter ràster o vectorial. Aquesta ortofoto està elaborada a partir del vol fotogramètric realitzat l'agost de 2015, i abasta les platges de l’àrea metropolitana de Barcelona (excepte el Port de Barcelona).

Base topogràfica contínua digital 2D d'escala 1:2.000 d'àmbit urbà i rústic de l'àrea metropolitana de Barcelona, de caràcter històric, ja que no s’actualitza des de l'any 2000. Tot i que l'escala de representació cartogràfica final és la 1:2.000, és convenient saber que es va elaborar mitjançant restitució fotogramètrica i treball de revisió de camp a partir de vols fotogramètrics analògics d'escala 1:5.000 (escala òptima per a la generació de cartografia 1:1.000). Aquest fet va donar una major precisió als elements cartografiats. Malgrat això, cal tenir en compte que el marc de referència d’aquesta cartografia va ser l’antiga xarxa geodèsica de la MMAMB, que estava referida a la xarxa geodèsica de l’Instituto Geográfico Nacional, prèviament a la implementació de la Xarxa Utilitària de l’ICGC. Aquest fet pot afectar, en algunes zones, a la precisió absoluta de les coordenades dels elements cartografiats. El primer vol fotogramètric corresponent a aquesta sèrie cartogràfica digital és de l'any 1986 i la data de darrera actualització és diferent per cada full. La sèrie consta de 424 fulls.

The points identified in this data set correspond to: urban facilities, companies and shops, hotels and restaurants, municipal offices or places of interest. For each point, the name of the place or establishment and the postal address.
