Per tant una ortofoto té les propietats mètriques d’un mapa i la informació d’una fotografia, i a més està georeferenciada, el que permet poder superposar-la amb altra informació geogràfica de caràcter ràster o vectorial. Aquesta ortofoto està elaborada a partir del vol fotogramètric realitzat el setembre de 2012 amb un vehicle aeri no tripulat, i abasta les platges de l’àrea metropolitana de Barcelona (a excepció del Port de Barcelona, la zona adjacent a l’Aeroport de Barcelona i el tram entre el Port Olímpic i la Barceloneta).
