Hydrogeological units v1.0 - November 2022

Delimitation of the hidrogeological units of Catalonia (aquifers, aquitards, aquicludes and aquifer systems), i.e. those parts of the lithosphere with distinctive parameters for water storage and conduction. The data model of this geoinformation is based on the technical specifications of geological data of the INSPIRE Directive (2007/2/CE).

IDEC / unitats-hidrogeologiques-v1r0-20221102
Purpose
The purposes of this geoinformation are: to facilitate the management and protection of existing groundwater both in the internal and external basins of Catalonia; plan and establish control measures and/or restrictions regarding the implementation of certain types of activity or land uses; delimit the main aquifers that allow the definition of groundwater bodies as management units in hydrological planning; make it possible to carry out territorial analysis or incidence operations and consultations with other sets of geographic information data, with the possibility of generating other layers of information and reports.

Domain consistency

Name of measure
Compliance with INSPIRE requirements (metadata)
Evaluation method description
The compliance of the metadata is evaluated using the "INSPIRE Reference Validator" web tool. The metadata is considered correct when the only errors reported are related with the main language of the metadata file. These errors are due to the fact that Catalan is not included in the list of official languages of the European Union.

Statement
The delimitation of hydrogeological units (UH) of Catalonia is a layer of information on the hydrogeological environment that covers the entire territory of Catalonia based on the classification proposed by the INSPIRE Directive (Infrastructure for Spatial information in Europe) 2007/2/CE. The delimitation, classification and characterization of the hydrogeological units are carried out based on the review and update of the delimitation of aquifers in Catalonia at a scale of 1:50,000 prepared by the Catalan Water Agency and its data model is based on the technical guide of INSPIRE Directive Geological Data Specifications and Geology Spatial Dataset Transformation Guide. The geometry of the polygons of each of the hydrogeological units is reviewed and updated based on geological cartography at a scale of 1:50,000, on the surface divisions of the basins and hydrographic sub-basins, on the network of rivers and on the administrative divisions in the coastline. For a better interpretation of the hydrogeology of the territory and the subsequent delimitation of the hydrogeological units, other support geoinformation is also used, such as the map of hydrogeological areas at a scale of 1:250,000 (ICGC, 2017), the delimitation of groundwater bodies (ACA, 2022), the hydrogeological formations of the geological map of Catalonia 1:25,000 (Geotreball V - Hydrogeological Map) and other data, the hydrogeological database of the Catalan Water Agency (BDH) and the database and system of information from the ICGC hydrogeological map of Catalonia (BDIMHCat). In general, we work with a precision equivalent to a scale of 1:50,000, although in some areas it may be better thanks to the data used (for example, on the coastline or in areas where information on basement materials is available, hydrogeological and/or geological mapping at a scale of 1:25,000).
