Biophysical variables of trees v1.1 2016-2017

Representation, as a grid of 20 m resolution, of the following biophysical variables of the trees (the one identified in the Land Cover Map of Catalonia as wooded forest masses), which allow to know the structure of the wooded mass: Total aerial biomass; Total aerial carbon; Volume with bark; Foliar biomass; Basal area; Tree cover; Average normal diameter; Medium height; Foliar area index (available in some editions only); Density of feet per hectare (available only in some editions).

Purpose
The specific objectives of this geoinformation are: To facilitate the knowledge and interpretation of the structure of the wooded mass from diverse fields, especially the environmental one and biological; Provide information on broad coverage and monitoring of policies implemented in terms of ecosystem services, forest management, use and exploitation; Generate objective, time-reproducible forest metrics and reduce costs of fieldwork-based approaches; Facilitate operational analysis in combination with other thematic products and field data, such as coverages and habitats maps; Facilitate the knowledge of the spatial distribution of the tree cover, since it is a fundamental requirement in the analysis of the changes, impacts and potential evolutions of changes of the covers in the time; Prevent forest fires, through the design of prevention infrastructures and actions on the fuel loads exerted by the use of wood and forest biomass.

Specific usage
Some use cases of this geoinformation are: PREVINCAT Project: Use of the biophysical variables of the trees to carry out simulations of forest fires. Project developed by the CTFC jointly with the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda (DAC); Soil moisture prediction: The dominant height and foliar biomass variables are used, together with soil information and forest inventories, to make soil moisture predictions. The CTFC carries out projects in this area; SIGPAC (DAC): Determination of grass coefficients, based on the tree cover of each plot; Obtaining growth models of holm oak and chestnut trees (Barcelona Provincial Council): The volume with bark and the dominant height are used for the stratification of the sampling areas; Drafting of instruments for the management of public estates (Barcelona Provincial Council): Stratification of the forest inventory and calculation of dasometric variables in hardly accessible monospecific stands; Valuation of estates for their acquisition (Barcelona Provincial Council); Drafting of Municipal Forest Plans: Municipal and supra-municipal Forest Management Instruments (Girona Provincial Council); Studies of splinter production potential in the Girona counties (Girona Provincial Council); Development of landscape models that project some of the biophysical variables into the future (CREAF-CTFC); Link of biophysical variables with biodiversity information (forest birds) in order to be able to interpret new forest biodiversity indicators (CREAF-CTFC); Detection at cabinet of mature forests (CREAF-CTFC): Biophysical variables provide complementary and prospective information; Map of vulnerability to drought for all of Catalonia: VULNEMAP (CREAF-CTFC).

Domain consistency

Name of measure
Compliance with INSPIRE requirements (metadata)
Evaluation method description
The compliance of the metadata is evaluated using the "INSPIRE Reference Validator" web tool. The metadata is considered correct when the only errors reported are related with the main language of the metadata file. These errors are due to the fact that Catalan is not included in the list of official languages of the European Union.

Statement
The 20 m resolution maps of biophysical variables of the trees are obtained mainly from LiDAR data, forest inventory data and the Land Cover Map of Catalonia, following the methodology described below: 1. The LiDAR data are processed to obtain a good classification of the vegetation and terrain points and calculate the LiDAR metrics that define the structural characteristics of the wooded forest masses; 2. The allometric equations are applied for each species at the tree level of the forest inventories to obtain the estimation of biophysical variables; 3. The land cover maps are processed to assign each of the 20x20 m cells the corresponding tree cover; 4. From the LiDAR metrics, the statistical models that best fit the forest inventory are calculated; 5. The cartography is generated by applying to the LiDAR metrics the models obtained based on the species and tree categories indicated on the cover map; 6. Confidence intervals are calculated.
