- Purpose
- The objectives of this geoinformation are: 1- To serve as an instrument for the georeferencing of population statistical data as well as of electoral processes, facilitating its graphical representation, consultation, analysis or the crossing with other data sets of geographic information; 2- Facilitate the knowledge, on the part of the public administration and the citizenship, of the territorial boundaries of the municipal districts and census sections of Catalonia, as well as their identification.

- Description
- The dataset referred to in this metadata corresponds to the entire territory of Catalonia. Its horizontal extension is described in this metadata in geographical coordinates with the minimum and maximum longitude and latitude of the minimum rectangle containing the cartography scope. It is, therefore, an approximate geographical area.

- Compliance with INSPIRE requirements (metadata)
- Evaluation method description
- The compliance of the metadata is evaluated using the "INSPIRE Validador" Web tool, "Conformance Class 2" test. The metadata is considered correct when the only errors reported are related with the main language of the metadata file. These errors are due to the fact that Catalan is not included in the list of official languages of the European Union.

- Statement
- The delimitation and primary codification of the municipal districts and the census sections was the result of the integration, carried out jointly by the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) and the Statistical Institute of Catalonia (Idescat) in 1998 and 1999, of two separate areas of the census section of Catalonia corresponding to the Municipal Population Register of 1996 (reference date 1 May 1996): a) municipalities in the metropolitan area of Barcelona (counties of the Alt Penedès, el Baix Llobregat, el Barcelonès, el Garraf, el Maresme, el Vallès Occidental and el Vallès Oriental), in the form of a digital archive with the delimitation and codification of the municipal districts and of the census sections of this scope, ceded by the former "Mancomunitat" of Municipalities of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (MMAMB) to Idescat, and of this to the ICGC, through two agreements; b) other municipalities in Catalonia, the digitization of which was carried out by the ICGC based on the analysis of the descriptive documentation of the delimitation and coding of the municipal districts and the census sections of each municipality (literal descriptions, sketches or plans at various scales), deposited with the "Instituto Nacional de Estadística" (INE), and which was compiled by Idescat, and transferred by the latter to the ICGC by agreement. Subsequent updates consider the annual archives with the digitization of the census section compiled by the INE, transferred to Idescat, and by the latter to the ICGC, by means of two agreements. The availability of these files, as a derivative of the Continuous Population Register, with a reference date of January 1 of each year, was systematized in 2002. That is why the distribution of the product Census sections v1.0 includes the annual series from 2002 onwards. Other sources are also used, such as district and section maps published by the city councils, or the "Callejero del Censo Electoral" published by the INE, which contains the sections of urban roads and those disseminateds of the districts and sections. The delimitation of the municipalities is based on the one included in the Municipal Base of Catalonia of the ICGC (scale 1:50000 until the update of 2016 and 1:5000 in the later ones) having introduced certain modifications in order to be able to maintain the consistency of the census section where it is supported by “de facto” municipal boundaries that do not correspond to the boundaries set out in the Municipal Base. The georeferencing of the delimitation of the municipal districts and of the census sections inside the municipalities is supported in ICGC cartography, initially in topographic cartography at 1:50000 scale and, gradually, as the revision of the delimitation, also in topographic cartography and orthophoto of larger scales. In addition, the cadastre is also used to support some boundaries that are related to it, such as perimeters of urban areas, where there are no more suitable alternative topographic references. Doubts of interpretation of the delimitation and codification of the municipal districts and of the census sections of the municipalities are solved by means of consultation with the respective city councils. Each update of this geoinformation incorporates the modifications of delimitation and codification of the municipal districts and of the census sections produced until their date of reference.
