Satellite NDVI v1.0

Mosaic of the territory of Catalonia representing the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), through the combination of rectified images captured by satellite in the red and near-infrared bands. This index allows estimating the vigor of the vegetation, based on the normalized difference between the radiation reflected in the infrared band of the electromagnetic spectrum with respect to the red band of the visible spectrum.

Purpose
The main objectives of this geoinformation are: To enable periodic temporal analyses of changes in the territory, and to facilitate knowledge and interpretation of its evolution from various areas of action such as urban planning and environmental; To determine different aspects related to the state of vegetation: plant growth, plant cover, biomass volume, or determination of the state and location of urban greenery; To facilitate knowledge and interpretation of the evolution of the territory from various areas, especially environmental and biological, as well as to enable the carrying out of temporal analyses of changes in vegetation in a context of climate analysis; To enable the carrying out of operations and queries of analysis or territorial incidence, for example related to vegetation, with other sets of geographic information data, with the possibility of generating maps and reports.

Compliance with INSPIRE requirements (metadata)
Evaluation method description
The compliance of the metadata is evaluated using the "INSPIRE Reference Validator" web tool. The metadata is considered correct when the only errors reported are related with the main language of the metadata file. These errors are due to the fact that Catalan is not included in the list of official languages of the European Union.

Statement
This data set is prepared from the rectified satellite images necessary to cover the territory of Catalonia in a specific month, with which a composition is prepared by means of a mosaic according to cut lines that may be irregular and that define the contributions of each image in the resulting orthoimage. Once the mosaic is obtained, the information captured in the red and near-infrared bands is combined, following the formula expressed below, to obtain the NDVI, which is the value assigned to each pixel: NDVI = (near-infrared - red) / (near-infrared + red). Finally, a linear factor is applied to the original radiometry to go from the real values (between -1 and 1) to the “discretized” 8-bit representation, with values from 0 to 200.
