Map of marine habitats of Catalonia

The map contains a detailed representation of the relief, depth, seabed type and marine habitats identified on the coast of Catalonia. The area surveyed was the entire Catalan coast up to 50 m depth. The Marine Habitats Map brings together the following data sets: Marine habitats (EUNIS classification level 3 and 4); Complementary marine habitats (EUNIS classification level 5); Seabed type; Coastal strip elevation model; and Bathymetry.

Purpose
Official and reference cartography that offers a detailed view of the seabed, with precise, homogeneous and comparable data. Some of the applications are the following: Conservation of threatened and protected species; Prevention and fight against invasive species; Planning and management of protected marine areas; Environmental assessment of plans and projects; Support for professional and recreational fishing; Support for aquatic activities (diving, sailing, etc.); Monitoring and Control Program linked to the Water Framework Directive; Assessment of the state of coastal and transitional water bodies; Coastal sanitation systems and regulation of discharge authorizations into the sea; Coastal management in authorizations of seasonal services and authorizations of works in the maritime-terrestrial public domain; Management of dredging and dumping of sand on beaches; Construction of infrastructures that require the occupation of the seabed.

Compliance with INSPIRE requirements (metadata)
Evaluation method description
The compliance of the metadata is evaluated using the "INSPIRE Reference Validator" web tool. The metadata is considered correct when the only errors reported are related with the main language of the metadata file. These errors are due to the fact that Catalan is not included in the list of official languages of the European Union.

Statement
The area surveyed was the entire Catalan coast, from Portbou to Les Cases d'Alcanar and up to 50 m depth, a total of 189,277 ha. The data collection, processing and map preparation campaign was carried out over 4 years (2021-2024). To survey the shallower part (up to approximately 15 m depth), the airborne bathymetric LiDAR sensor was used. For the deeper part (from 10 to 50 m depth), the following methodology was used: Sediment profiler; Multibeam echosounder; Side-scan sonar; Dredging and dives to collect samples; Remotely operated underwater vehicles for taking images of the seabed.
