Preliminary studies for the stabilization of the beaches of Gavà and Viladecans

The study analyses the evolution of the coastline and the hydrodynamic behaviour of the beach in the municipality of Gavà and the possibility of implementing a stabilization solution with a geotube similar to that used in Sète (France). It also collects environmental information and the characterization of the habitats, marine communities and sediments in this environment. Finally, it proposes a roadmap to improve and expand knowledge of the problems detected and propose appropriate solutions.

Purpose
The objective of the study is multiple: To analyze the behavior of the entire cell, between the Port of Barcelona and Port Ginesta, monitoring the evolution of the coastline; To carry out a coastal hydrodynamic study at a local scale in the municipality of Gavà simulating the evolution of the beach in the event of different storm conditions and analyzing the feasibility of proposing a solution with geotubes such as the one implemented in Sète; To study and characterize the environmental situation of the habitats, marine communities and sediments for the development and future implementation of solutions; To prepare a roadmap aimed at improving knowledge about the causes of the regression of the cell and the final proposal of appropriate solutions.

Statement
Two datasets have been used to characterize the evolution of the coastline in the Llobregat Delta coastal range: The first dataset consists of a collection of coastlines covering the period from 1990 to 2018. They have been obtained from the digitization of aerial photos taken by the Cartographic and Geologic Institute of Catalonia. One line has been obtained by CEDEX. The available years are the following: 1990, 1995, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018; The second set corresponds to a series of beach width measurements in some locations along the Llobregat coast that have been taken monthly by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) during the period 2001-2019.
