Inventory of areas of geological interest v2.1 - October 2024
Delimitation, location and attributes of the elements of geological interest identified in Catalonia that are included in the Inventory of Areas of Geological Interest of Catalonia published in 2000 and updated in 2020 and of those that have been identified in other inventories or scientific and informative publications. Spaces of geological interest are places of interest for their unique and/or representative nature, which allow the study and interpretation of the origin and evolution of geological domains, including the processes that have shaped them, the climates of the past and its paleobiological evolution; and constitute the geological heritage of a territory.

- Purpose
- The objectives of this geoinformation are: to define and establish the necessary measures for the preservation of the Geological Heritage; facilitate knowledge, by the public administration and citizens, of the territorial limits of the areas of geological interest contained in the Inventory of Areas of Geological Interest of Catalonia, as well as their identification and complementary information; provide a reference base for the development of any activity that has a territorial impact and that must take into account the existence of protected sites (they are particularly relevant in the field of technical, management, planning or administration activities of the territory); make it possible to carry out territorial analysis or incidence operations and queries with other sets of geographic information data.

- The data of this dataset do not aim to achieve compliance with INSPIRE regulations. For this reason, its conformity is not evaluated and it is declared not conformant compliant by default.

- Evaluation method description
- The compliance of the metadata is evaluated using the "INSPIRE Reference Validator" web tool. The metadata is considered correct when the only errors reported are related with the main language of the metadata file. These errors are due to the fact that Catalan is not included in the list of official languages of the European Union.

- The initial digitization of the spaces was carried out using the topographic Base 1:50,000 of the ICGC. The subsequent delimitations are adjusted to geological elements of the Geological Map of Catalonia 1:25,000 or the Regional Geological Map 1:50,000, depending on availability at the date of the works, or to cartographic elements of the Topographic Map of Catalonia 1:25,000, and they do not substantially modify the originals. Regarding the evaluation of the interest collected in the various attributes, as well as those related to susceptibility and risk of degradation, it has been carried out according to the methodology García-Cortés, Á., Carcavilla, L., Díaz- Martínez, E. and Vegas, J. (2018): Methodological document for the preparation of the Spanish inventory of places of geological interest (IELIG). Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, Madrid.
