Settlement areas v3.0 - May 2025
Geographic areas of settlement that appear in the Geographic Names Database of Catalonia (ICGC) and the Nomenclátor de municipios y entidades de población (INE), and the polygons that appear in the Economic Activity Polygon Information System (SIPAE), with their names and codes and the administrative divisions where they are located. The interpretative delimitation of the settlement areas includes the representation and location of buildings and constructions with a defined urban structure and the groupings of buildings including the associated spaces that respond to the same geographical name.

- The data of this dataset do not aim to achieve compliance with INSPIRE regulations. For this reason, its conformity is not evaluated and it is declared not conformant compliant by default.

- The compliance of the metadata is evaluated using the "INSPIRE Reference Validator" web tool. The metadata is considered correct when the only errors reported are related with the main language of the metadata file. These errors are due to the fact that Catalan is not included in the list of official languages of the European Union.

- The settlement areas are selected based on the population entities from the Geographic Names Database of Catalonia (ICGC) and the Nomenclátor de municipios y entidades de población (INE), as well as from the SIPAE in the case of industrial sectors. To complete the industrial sector, the Geographic Names Database of Catalonia is used to select those toponyms associated with specific industrial-type concepts (see the technical specifications for more detail). The polygons are delineated using the Territorial Topographic Reference (streets, paths, parcels, buildings...), taking into account the administrative divisions, and are then adjusted through photointerpretation using the current orthophoto (adding buildings, etc.), whenever possible, to planimetric elements of the territory such as paths, parcels, buildings... In the case of industrial sectors listed in the SIPAE, the delineations provided there are used as a starting point and then adjusted like the rest of the settlement areas. Each area is then assigned the name found in the Geographic Names Database of Catalonia, or the one listed in the SIPAE in the case of industrial sectors not included in the Geographic Names Database. Finally, a specific code is also assigned to each area, along with the INE entity codes where it is located (if the area is included in the INE’s Nomenclátor of population units), and the information on the administrative divisions where it is located.
