Analysis of the patterns of use and frequentation (2000-2017) on the beaches of the island of Menorca (Balearic Islands)

The patterns of use and frequentation of beaches are a useful tool in coastal management and planning. The aim of this article is to apply the methodology for the analysis of physical carrying capacity in 16 beaches of the island of Menorca, based on the values in m²/user recommended in 2000. A multi-temporal analysis of the evolution of the beaches is carried out using qualitative variables that allow obtaining the trends of the beaches with parameters that analyze their management and occupation (2000-2017). The results obtained show that the beaches have acceptable carrying capacities and that environmental management, their publicity, and the services provided condition their spatio-temporal evolution. The methodology allows establishing future scenarios through the use of the analyzed variables.

Purpose
The objective of this study is, generically, to provide data and knowledge to: Facilitate the management of the first miles of sea, continuously land-sea. This includes the comprehensive management of beaches, equipment and furniture, cleaning and dune areas; Develop any activity that has an impact on the coastal area; Carry out urban and territorial planning studies, for the design and assessment of the environmental impact of infrastructures, etc.; Evaluate the dynamics of sand movements in both the emerged and submerged parts of the beaches, in order to predict the effects of their evolution on management and planning, as well as promote studies on the general dynamics and generalized evolution of sand; Know the evolution of the coastline and the managed surface; Provide information that contributes to promoting actions and projects to improve adaptive capacity in the face of the impacts of climate change; Facilitate knowledge, by the public administration, the scientific world and the public, of the morphology of the coast. Specifically, the study proposes to: Analyze the physical carrying capacity of 16 beaches on the island of Menorca and their spatio-temporal evolution to improve coastal management and planning.
