Statement
The basic health areas are delimited based on geographical, demographic, social and epidemiological factors and homogeneous communication routes, subject to the following criteria: a) As a general criterion, the basic health area will cover a population of between 5,000 and 25,000 inhabitants; b) Exceptionally, in urban areas and when the level of demographic density so requires, the aforementioned maximum limit may be exceeded up to 40,000 inhabitants; c) Likewise, in rural areas, basic health areas may be established that do not exceed the minimum limit of 5,000 inhabitants in those cases where demographic dispersion and the presence of geographical accidents so advise. In any case, the establishment of the territorial scope will seek to respect isochrones that do not exceed thirty minutes in the deployment from any point in the Area to the health center with the usual means of transport. The initial polygons come from the work carried out by the General Directorate of Health Planning of the Department of Health. The following cartographic sources are used to update and improve the precision of the polygon boundaries: Administrative Divisions of Catalonia (ICGC), 1:5,000 municipality layer; Street Database of Catalonia (ICGC), road layer; Land Infrastructure Graph of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya); Hydrographic Network of Catalonia (Catalan Water Agency). The health sectors are made up of a set of basic health areas, and in turn, the health regions are ordered by grouping health sectors.
