Using dune-restricted species to assess the degree of natural diversity of dune systems on Mediterranean tourist coasts
The study focuses on floristic diversity and impacts on dune systems along the Catalan coast. Twenty-one dune-restricted plant species were identified as indicators of ecological integrity. A new index was applied to measure species diversity relative to total site biodiversity. Results indicate that dunes with less human activity retain more native species.

- Purpose
- The objective of this study is, generically, to provide data and knowledge to: Facilitate the management of the first miles of sea, continuously land-sea. This includes the comprehensive management of beaches, equipment and furniture, cleaning and dune areas; Develop any activity that has an impact on the coastal area; Carry out urban and territorial planning studies, for the design and assessment of the environmental impact of infrastructures, etc.; Evaluate the dynamics of sand movements in both the emerged and submerged parts of the beaches, in order to predict the effects of their evolution on management and planning, as well as promote studies on the general dynamics and generalized evolution of sand; Know the evolution of the coastline and the managed surface; Provide information that contributes to promoting actions and projects to improve adaptive capacity in the face of the impacts of climate change; Facilitate knowledge, by the public administration, the scientific world and the public, of the morphology of the coast. Specifically, the study proposes to: Assess the natural diversity of Mediterranean dune systems and the impact of anthropogenic pressures through the analysis of dune-restricted plant species.
