Synthesis of the hydrogeological macrounits into which the territory can be divided, called hydrogeological areas, and classification of the formations of the Geological Map of Catalonia 1:250,000 according to their lithological characteristics, type of porosity and consolidation.

- The purposes of this geoinformation are: to disseminate the hydrogeological characteristics of the entire territory and of the subsoil, understanding that there may be a certain demand for water anywhere, covered more or less satisfactorily by groundwater; to facilitate the management and protection of existing groundwater both in the internal and external basins of Catalonia; plan and establish control measures and/or restrictions regarding the implementation of certain types of activity or land uses; make it possible to carry out territorial analysis or incidence operations and consultations with other sets of geographic information data, with the possibility of generating other layers of information and reports.

- The compliance of the metadata is evaluated using the "INSPIRE Reference Validator" web tool. The metadata is considered correct when the only errors reported are related with the main language of the metadata file. These errors are due to the fact that Catalan is not included in the list of official languages of the European Union.

- In December 1992, the first edition of the Map of Hydrogeological Areas of Catalonia 1:250,000 was published, which has been subsequently revised and updated through office work based on two main sources of information: geological cartography 1:250,000 by the ICGC and the delimitation of aquifers 1:50,000 by the ACA. For those cases in which it is necessary to add elements (or a part), the planimetry of its vertices is obtained from the Topographic Map of Catalonia 1:250,000.
